Welcome to Charny…

Charnwood Street in Leicester – popularly known as ‘Charny’ – was built in the early 1870s and demolished in 1970 when the area was redeveloped. It ran from Kent Street to Spinney Hill Road to the east of the city centre, parallel with Humberstone Road. Many people will remember it, either because they or their relatives lived there, or because they went shopping there. There were around 100 small shops in the street, including butchers, bakers, grocers and sweetshops, those selling new or second hand clothes, bicycles, prams, wool, radios (and later, televisions), and the famous ‘Paddy’s Swag Shop’ which sold almost anything you can imagine!

The national shop chain of Wilkinson’s also started in a small shop in Charnwood Street, which attracted customers and ‘window-shoppers’ from other parts of Leicester and beyond. Many people will also remember the nearby brewery, the local schools, places of worship and cinemas, the accordion teacher Francis Wright, and the artist Fred Weston, whose ‘studio’ consisted of the front room of a shop.

  1. I lived on Sherrard Rd for 16 years. I had heard and read some years ago that there was a Poltergeist on Sherrard Road that was exorcised by a Catholic priest. Unfortunately I can no longer find online the story about that exorcism. I wonder, do any past residents of Sherrard Rd know about this or indeed have their own memories of hauntings in any of the houses.

  2. Hi, I lived at 75 sherrard road and left around the 70s.. But I don’t remember anything about a poltergeist…Im 66 now .. But I do have fantastic memories of sherrard road and charny..

  3. My grandparents lived in Farringdon Street. In 1964, when I was four years old, they took me on holiday to Skegness in their Standard Ten car. Our first stop was the bakers in Charny for a fresh baked warm loaf, which was our breakfast! I used to spend my pocket money in Jeff’s coin shop (left of Walpoles in the photo at the top of this page).I still have the silver threepenny bits and the Victorian pennies that I bought at his shop. Jeff would have been in his late 20s and always wore a suit.

  5. Hello, my mother grew up on 144 Charnwood st. Her name was/is Sheila Lilian Underwood, she was born in 1926. She told me she had very good memories living there with her grandmother. Would love to hear from someone who lived near this address. thank you

    • Hello Jayne, my great grandmother had her last known travel address at 148 Charnwood street in 1923. Do you think your mother knew who lived there? Last Name Cartwright 🙂

      • Hi there, I’m sorry to tell you this, my mother is gone now. I really don’t remember her talking about someone with that last name. I will tell you this, my mother was born out of wedlock and was ashamed by this her whole life so when I would ask her about her life in England she was not very forthcoming. Her parents did marry when she was about two, but never took her fathers last name and they never lived with him. I’m sorry I can’t help you. I wish she were still alive I know she could answer questions I still have. Good luck, Jayne

    • Thank you for this. My mother was born out of wedlock in 1926 and I believe she carried that shame her entire life. She met my father during WWll while he was stationed there. She told me a little about her life, but not much. She lived at 144 Charnwood st. She did tell me the nickname for the street. Again thank you and I look forward to more. Jayne Rosa Johansen

  8. Hi, gang. I lived on Sherrard road from birth until I was 13 (1963). I married a Belgrave girl and lived for a while in a flat above a plummers shop on Belgrave road, opposite the B.U.
Then returned to the area and lived on Laurel road. Does anyone remember the curry Mahal on Evington road? my first experience of real curry. I still remember those delicious flavours!
I’m 73 now but still look back on my early years fondly, Charnwood street school, then Green lane boys. Wonderful happy times on spinney hill park. Oh where have the years gone?
Best wishes to you all, Paul.

      • Hi, Kids, Paul Howlett here, I lived at No97 Sherrard road until 1963. Wish we had never moved away. There was nothing like living on a terraced street for camaraderie and fun and games.
My siblings are, Ann (bossy boots), Kath, Mick, and younger sister Diane (actually Dianna).
Some of the names I remember are, George Bale, Eric Hawthorne, Graham,Christopher, Carole and Alan Pugh, John Larder, Keith, Stuart, and Brian Crewe, David Goode, Valerie and Barbara Smith, Carl Fox, Billy and Miriam Townsend, and I think the Lorraine you’re refering to Lilian, may be Lorraine McDonald sister of Johnny. Do you remember Barnacle & Bennett chrome platers?
If only we had a time machine and could return to those halcyon days. Best Regards to all.
        Paul.

      • Hi Brian, yes it was Lorraine Mcdonald and my friend Marion .. I think she lived next door to Brian and his brother but can’t remember his name or was that you!! I do remember some of the names you mention though.. I would love to go back to those days.. We had a tin bath hanging on a wall in the garden, it would take forever to fill on a Sunday night ready for school the next day.. it was a case of one in and one out LOL.. We had very happy times playing in the street or on spinny park too.. God life was so good back then..

      • Hi Lilian, I went to ‘Charnie’ school, 1959-66.
Your brother Ronald and Bill Morris were both in my class.
I lived on Beal St off Upper Kent Street.
I remember going to Bill’s house. His dad kept pigeons.

      • Omg really! Yes Billy hung around with my brother. I haven’t seen anything of Billy for a few years now and sadly I lost my brother to cancer about 15 years ago.

I do hope you are well and life has been good to you! Do you remember my younger brother Lewis?
        Regards
        Lilian ward

      • Hi Lilian,
I don’t remember your brother Lewis I’m afraid.
Some others I remember from my year were Barry Woolman, Melvyn Crawford, Paul Hinton, Peter Cicinskas . . .
Lynn Bassett was another whose parents had a shop on Vulcan Rd I think.
        All the best,
        Dave.

      • Barry has his own cleaning business and worked for him many years ago… I often see Melvin too… They are all in and around Leicester and often bump into them..

Are you still living in Leicester

      • Left Leicester in 1973. Lived in Sheffield until 1982, then Scarborough until last January and now near Sunderland.

  10. DOES ANYONE REMEMBER CIVILS GROCERY SHOP IN CHARNY?
MRS MURRAY WAS THE MANAGER, AND THEY HAD TWO OTHER SHOPS IN LEICESTER, ONE IN STONESBY AVENUE, AND THE OTHER ONE I DONT REMEMBER.

    • Wish I could help you, my mother was born at home and grew up at 144 Charnwood, sadly she is gone now. Good luck finding answers

    • Hi Nathan….Yes I remember Civils on Charny. You are correct, Mrs Murray was the manager. I remember her as she had jet black hair and always wore red lipstick. All my family shopped there and some worked in it too. I don’t remember the other stores, only the one beside us on Charnwood St. Sorry I can’t be of any more help.

      • Hi Mary, thanks for replying. I’m glad my memory hasn’t deserted me altogether!!
George Moore was the area manager for the Leicester shops, a rather sleazy man I recall.
I remember the third shop was on Evington Road, all three closed when Civils opened a bigger shop in the new precinct in
        Melbourne Road.

    • Late reply but yes I remember civils and worked for Mrs Murray for a while.. I loved those days and loved charnwood Street.. I went to charnwood school then moat girls..I used to play on spinny him park on Sundays…
We lived at 75 Sherrard Road till I moved a way at age 17.. I am 69 now
I’ve been back to the street and my house is one of the lucking ones thats not been knocked down..

      • Hi Lilian,
        Good to hear from you.
I’m glad to hear that your old house was spared, so much “clearance” went on all over the country in the name of “improvement “.
Most of what replaced these friendly areas was not so good.
        Keep healthy,
        Nathan

      • Omg that chap you mentioned was a dirty old . I’ve never mentioned it to anyone about his behaviour around me . But yes not a nice man!!
        Lilian

    • The other shop was VG’S I remember it well my mum used to shop there, and the man behind the counter always used to put some free sweets in the bag for us kids, I attended greenlane road school and bridge road school, along with my older and younger sister’s and brother’s, we are the stokes family from humberstone road,

  11. Hi Nathan, I didn’t know the area manager but I might have seen him in the store but not know who he was.. Civils was so popular on Charnwood St. There also was a VG store too across the road and up a bit towards , but Civils was way bigger. I do remember their meat counter with all the hams etc they would slice. So sad that Charnwood St was demolished. All those wonderful shops and the whole neighbourhood was just wiped away!

    • Hi Mary,
Charnwood St was a proper community you could buy just about everything in that area.
When it was all swept away it ripped the heart out. I worked for Civils for just under ten years in various locations ( they had 30 plus shops)
But never in such a community as Charny!
All the best for the New Year.
